Galapagos - The Galapagos Islands
The islands were first explored by the Spanish in 1535, and during the 17th and 18th century were used as a meeting point by pirates. In 1978 UNESCO declared the islands a World Heritage Site and in 2000 the Ecuadorian government passed a law to strictly control settlement, tourism and fishing on them.
